Choosing a Location for Your Family Photos

You’ve nailed down your session date! Yay! Now comes one of the most exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) parts: choosing the perfect location. The backdrop you choose will help set the tone for your entire session and plays a big role in how your final photos feel.

When picking your spot, I always encourage families to think about what feels most like you. Do you have a favorite park where your kids love to run around? A field or historic building you drive by and think, “That would make such a pretty photo!” Maybe there’s a cozy spot at home, a favorite trail, or even your kiddo’s baseball field that holds special memories. Locations that are meaningful to you always make the photos extra special.

Once you’ve got a few ideas in mind, think about a few practical things, too:

  • Restrooms: Are there any nearby? (Always a good thing to know!)
  • Parking and walking distance: If there’s a bit of a trek, bring comfy shoes for everyone.
  • Changing spots: Will you need somewhere to touch up hair or change outfits?
  • Crowds: Some popular spots can get busy. Are you okay with that, or would you prefer something quieter?

I’ve photographed beautiful sessions in lots of different locations. From cozy backyards and local parks to lakes, open fields, and downtown. No matter your vision, I can help you find a location that fits your family’s vibe-fun and casual, classic and timeless, or full of personality.

So don’t stress too much about picking the perfect place. Together, we’ll find the spot that feels just right for your family—and that’s where the magic happens.
